My Photography Story…
Welcome to my site! I hope you stay awhile and check things out. Like me, this site is a work in progress- - hopefully improving with some good ole’ fashion hard work, perseverance, and devotion. With that in mind, let me tell you about my photographic journey.
My love for photography was sparked in college. At the time, I needed to fill a few elective credits in my TV Communications major. This was before digital cameras were available; a time that I look back on with joy and memories of cranking film through the camera and developing the film in the dark room.
Leap frog eight years and after marrying the love of my life, we had our first child. My wife, not having many pictures of herself as a child, firmly said to me, “I need you to get a camera and take pictures of our baby. I only have two pictures of me as a little child and I am not going to have that happen with our kids.”
Those decisive words became a call-to-action! I quickly purchased a simple SLR camera with plenty of color film. With that came years of firing off snapshot after snapshot using the trusty in-camera flash whenever the light started fading. Before I knew it I was photographing our family reunions. I even photographed a wedding for a friend who couldn’t afford a professional photographer.
Nine years after purchasing my first film camera, I took a leap of faith and purchased my first digital camera. It was a Canon Rebel XTI. I was excited to move into the digital world of photography but was still a bit hesitant about this whole “digital” thing.
It was a year later during a trip to the Grand Canyon when my perspective on photography was forever changed. I woke up early to catch the bus that rides along the southern rim, dropping people off at their stop of choice. While waiting to catch my ride, a stranger, who was obviously a photographer, stood by me and we struck up a conversation. After exchanging pleasantries, our conversation moved to photography. I felt pretty good about my skill set, proudly carrying my digital camera and tripod but he surely sensed that I was a novice and graciously asked questions about my camera, what mode I generally shot in, what type of lenses I used, etc. He showed me his gear and how he shot things before leaving the bus at his intended stop. That was the last I saw or heard from him. After that conversation I decided I wanted to begin taking my photography more seriously. What adventures it has been since that day!
I’ve had the opportunity to travel to a few beautiful countries and locations around the world. With each adventure I look to enjoy God’s incredibly beautiful creation. And in the process try and capture just a few parts of it through my shooting and editing processes. I want to convey my understanding of the location and the emotions evoked within me at the time through my photos. I enjoy creating photographic series that tell a story about my subject. As you browse through my portfolio you will see a focus on landscapes, cityscapes, nature, and black and white photography. I also enjoy portraiture photography. Some of my work is done near home along the beautifully scenic coast of Virginia, but a lot is from my travels state-side and abroad. I’m always looking to broaden my artistic horizons by testing genres of photography. I consider myself truly blessed to be able to look through my camera’s viewfinder capturing whatever captures me.
Thanks so much for hearing my story. Hope you enjoy your time here.
